Before, in almost every case. An empty home is faster and more thorough to clean since there's no furniture to work around, and you avoid the risk of setting your belongings down on surfaces that haven't been cleaned yet. The only real exceptions are if you're moving in the same day as closing with no gap, or if you're doing a light touch-up rather than a full deep clean.
The Case for Cleaning Before You Move In
An empty home is objectively faster to clean. There's no furniture to move, no boxes stacked against walls, and no risk of tracking cleaning solution onto belongings that are still in transit. A cleaning team can reach every baseboard, every closet floor, and every cabinet interior without navigating around your life.
There's also a simple hygiene argument: your dishes, clothes, and toiletries are about to occupy that space. It makes more sense for cabinets and closets to be clean before those items go in, rather than wiping around them after the fact.
When 'After' Actually Makes Sense
- Same-day closing and move. If there's no gap between getting keys and the moving truck arriving, a full clean beforehand may not be logistically possible — in that case, a lighter clean shortly after, room by room, is the practical fallback.
- You're doing a light refresh, not a deep clean. If the home was recently professionally cleaned by the seller or previous tenant and you just want a final polish, timing is less critical either way.
How to Actually Schedule It
The cleanest approach for most Central Indiana movers looks like this:
- Confirm your closing date and get keys as early in the day as possible
- Schedule your move-in cleaning for the same morning or the day before, if the seller allows early access
- Have the moving truck arrive a few hours after the cleaning crew finishes, giving surfaces time to dry
If early access isn't possible, ask about scheduling flexibility — many cleaning companies, including ours, can work around a tight same-day window by prioritizing kitchens and bathrooms first and coming back for a lighter secondary pass if needed.
